Eddie Murphy will soon be back on the big screen with Mr. Church.
The indie drama will be released in theaters on Sept. 16, Cinelou Films’ co-CEOs Courtney Solomon and Mark Canton announced Thursday.
Directed by Bruce Beresford, Mr. Church stars Murphy as a man hired to cook for a dying woman and her young daughter, played by Britt Robertson. The film, based on the real-life experiences of screenwriter Susan McMartin, is Murphy’s first in four years (since 2012’s A Thousand Words).

Mr. Church received its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, with The Hollywood Reporter’s review calling it “a touching coming-of-age tale and an even more touching account of an unlikely friendship marked by love and respect,” in which “Murphy delivers the sort of superb character turn that may well mark a sea change in his career.”
The Cinelou and EMA film was produced by Solomon, Canton, Lee Nelson and David Buelow and executive produced by Shenghua Entertainment’s Yu Wei Chung, in addition to Brad Kaplan, Dennis L. Pelino and Fredy Bush. It will be distributed domestically by Cinelou Releasing and internationally via Cinelou’s deal with Warner Bros. International, and available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in the U.S. following the home entertainment release.
